The Gannon Gallery in the Bismarck State College Library offers an exhibition of painting by Williston native Aaron Hexom through Sept. 18.
Reception for the artist and his "Beauty in the Lack Thereof" exhibit is Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the gallery.
Hexom takes a minimalist approach to his oil landscapes characterized by a generous piece of sky. In this new body of work, he attempts to emulate the experience of being surrounded by the vast open landscape of the Great Plains. He feels this experience can negate the trivial and expand one's perception of the world.
"My aim is to create a sensation that involves an epiphany or revelation about something of great importance," Hexom said in his artist statement. "It is the brow-lifting 'Aha!' followed by the jaw-dropping awe – a reminder of how small we are."
Hexom studies at the New York Academy of Art. BSC hosts the exhibit in collaboration with the North Dakota Art Gallery Association, where Hexom is a member artist.
