Discussions on diversity issues begin at Bismarck State College Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Prairie Room.
The first program in the four-part Diversity University series features U. S. Attorney Timothy Purdon speaking on "The Challenges of Public Safety on Reservations in North Dakota and the Role of the U.S. Attorney's Office."
Purdon presents the scope of the issue based on his experiences and defines a path forward under the U.S. Attorney's Anti-Violence Strategy for Tribal Communities.
On Sept. 19, the program is about "Progress for LGBT Americans: What Does This Mean for North Dakotans?" In context with recent rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court and other government entities, state Rep. Josh Boschee (District 44) will give a North Dakota perspective.
The Sept. 26 presentation focuses on building vigorous and culturally adept employment opportunities in a state that is becoming more diverse. A panel facilitated by Rose Stoller of The Consensus Council discusses "Cultural Diversity in the Workplace," and how to ensure welcoming work environments. Other panel participants are KJL recruiter Michelle Miller, attorney Adele Page of Legal Services of North Dakota, customer service consultant Karen Siegfried from Job Service North Dakota, and Mark Del Vecchio, vice president of human resources at MDU Resources Group, Inc.
The location changes for the Oct. 3 program. Diversity-related speakers anchor the "Celebration of Cultures" in the National Energy Center of Excellence Bavendick Stateroom. All presentations begin at 7 p.m.
BSC's Embracing Diversity Team and the City of Bismarck sponsor the series.
