The concert by the Bismarck State College Wind Ensemble on Monday, April 14, features music by BSC band director John Darling, Claude T. Smith, Frank Ticheli, James Ployhar, and new composer Micheal Markowski.

Darling's composition, "Solemn Bugles," was commissioned by the West River Winds Community Band and its director, Ernie Borr. It premiered July 1, 2013, at a commemorative concert of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg held in conjunction with the North Dakota Heritage Center.

The piece is among three selections chosen as part of a continuing reflection on the American Civil War. Darling also has programmed "Dixie," adopted as the Confederacy's unofficial anthem, and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Markowski's "Camerado" takes inspiration from Walt Whitman's poem, "Song of the Open Road" (1856), which he found after the dedication in Jack Kerouac's 1957 book, "On the Road." The piece celebrates brotherhood, camaraderie, adventure and exploring new worlds.

Other selections by the ensemble are "Sun Dance" by Frank Ticheli, known for its song and dancelike components, and "Incidental Suite," a work in three movements by the award-winning Claude T. Smith.

The concert is presented at no charge during ArtsQuest, BSC's month-long celebration of the arts.
