Andrew J. Miller, director of choral activities at BSC, is the first-place recipient of the annual Edwin Fissinger Choral Competition.
Miller received a $1,000 cash prize, a publishing contract through Pavane Publishing and the world premier of his winning piece, "The Tyger", performed by the NDSU Concert Choir.
Miller earned a bachelor's degree in vocal music education from Bemidji State University prior to receiving his master's degree in choral conducting from Minnesota State University-Mankato. He has been teaching choral music in Minnesota and North Dakota since 2007.
Miller was the founder and artistic director of the Minnesota-based professional vocal ensemble From Age to Age, which has performed at American Choral Director Association state and regional conferences. The ensemble also was featured in Minnesota Public Radio's "A Taste of the Holiday" and "Regional Spotlight." Miller currently directs a vocal chamber ensemble in Bismarck called Inspiraré and serves as the repertoire and standards chair of student and youth activities for the North Dakota American Choral Director Association.
Santa Barbara Music Publishing has distributed several of Miller's compositions, including "If Music Be the Food of Love," "I Carry Your Heart with Me" and "Seeds." Hope Music Publishing distributed his piece titled "Alleluia."
The NDSU School of Music honors the legacy and traditions of noted choral composer and long-time NDSU choral conductor Edwin Fissinger with its annual choral composition competition.
