The fall concert by the Bismarck State College Wind Ensemble is Thursday, Nov. 14, and features selections that reflect the 50th anniversary of the John F. Kennedy assassination.
John Darling, director of bands and associate professor music, conducts the Wind Ensemble in a program that begins at 7:30 p.m. in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium, Schafer Hall.
From a hymn-based composition and John Phillip Sousa march to the dramatic music of "JFK: In Memoriam" by James Curnow, the pieces evoke a patriotic and reflective theme.
The program begins with "Prelude on an English Hymn" by Robert Sheldon followed by the "Hymn to the Fallen" from the John Williams score for the film, "Saving Private Ryan." Richard Saucedo's "Persistence" captures the feeling of trying to persevere higher and farther to reach life's goals.
Portions of Kennedy's speeches will accompany the performance of "JFK: In Memorium," thus paying homage to his life and times through both words and music.
The song known to U.S. Navy men and women as the "Navy Hymn" is a musical benediction that carries special meaning to all who sail the sea. Composer Claude Thomas Smith, an American band conductor and music educator, wrote "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" based on that hymn. Commissioned in 1975, it premiered in Washington, D.C., at a Kennedy Center celebration of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Navy Band.
The free concert concludes with "The Washington Post" march by Sousa. A reception with refreshments follows.
