Bismarck State College presents its Jazz Ensemble in concert Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.
Director John Darling has chosen a program with a breadth of musical styles from swing, blues and ballad to Latin, mambo and funk/rock.
Among the classic selections are "Basie Straight Ahead," written for the Count Basie Orchestra by Sammy Nestico, and "3x3x2x2x2=72," made famous by the Stan Kenton Orchestra and composed by Johnny Richards.
BSC students collaborated on writing the swing/blues number, "Blues on the Hill," as a class project. Two students are featured soloists. David Sokolfsky performs on flugel horn in the Latin number, "Gentle Rain," by Luiz Bonfa. Vocal tenor Aaron Landrie sings the beautiful ballad, "My Funny Valentine."
Charley Parker fans will hear his signature "Ornithology," and the standard ballad, "You Are Too Beautiful," by Rogers and Hart. Composer Rich Woolworth is represented with "Mambonucleosis" and "Dudley Did It," which concludes the concert.
